PV Library Approves Sustainable Purchasing Policy

Dec. 16, 2019 -- The Board of Library Trustees of the Palos Verdes Library District has adopted a  policy directing staff, where practicable and efficient, to adhere to best practices in sustainable purchasing in order to reduce the district’s impact on the environment.

At its November meeting, the board unanimously passed a resolution and policy directing the library district to endeavor to use sustainable and environmentally sound procurement practices in purchasing supplies and equipment for the district.  This includes considering the recyclability of all products, the amount of packaging used, the environmentally friendly practices of vendors and sources, and transportation distances involved in getting items to the District’s three libraries.  The staff also is advised to consider the possibility of repairing or repurposing an item as an alternative to replacing it.

“While the district already had a de facto environmentally friendly purchasing policy, this resolution puts the policy in writing,” said outgoing Board President Debby Stegura, who spearheaded the sustainable policy effort.  ”This resolution officially announces the Board of Library Trustees’ commitment to environmental sustainability.”
