Welcome to the 2023 Summer Read-A-Palooza for Kids!

This year's theme is "Find Your Voice."

Who can participate
Kids starting Transitional Kindergarten through 5th grade in Fall 2023 can join! 
When kids can participate
The Summer Read-A-Palooza starts on May 30th and ends on August 13th, 2023.
Why kids should participate
Read in the summer and you’ll maintain or even improve your reading skills! Discover the fun of reading. Try activities that challenge you. Experience how reading enhances every interest, hobby and trend you love. And remember, with Summer Read-a-Palooza, you can read anything! Any reading level, any topic, in any format. It’s fine to re-read a favorite or try something new and different!
How it works
To get started, drop by any PVLD location to pick up a game board log or print one out at home: 2023 Summer Read-A-Palooza Game Board 

Complete activities all summer long! Choose activities from a variety of options such as reading for 15 minutes, attending a library program, creating a wacky story, learning how to do a magic trick and more. Repeat your favorite activities as many times as you like. 
When you reach a "PICK A TRADING CARD" space on the game board, you've earned a souvenir trading card! Check out our trading cards for 2023! How many can you collect? Stop by any PVLD location to pick them up starting June 5th!

June 2023

Letters to Harriet Tubman

Songs and stories that tell the adventures of the heroic woman who fought slavery through the "underground railroad." You'll be inspired and ready to hope, dream & achieve. Presented thanks to funding from Arts Grown LA and the Music Center. Aimed at Kindergarten & up.

Try the Puzzle of the Week activity at the library!

Each week, you can figure out who used their voice to make the world a better place. Unscramble their name, use the hint or guess from the picture. Write your answer down and bring it to the desk, and collect a sticker for your mini Trading Card sheet!

How to play

Use your paper log to track the books you read! Any books count - your own books, library books, graphic novels, or audio books! When you have completed one checklist, you will receive a $5 Amazon gift card! Complete a second checklist and earn another $5 Amazon gift card. Limit two gift cards per person while supplies last. To get started, drop by any PVLD location to pick up a log card or print one out at home: 2023 Teen Log

Stop by any PVLD location to pick up your Amazon cards.  

Prizes

Participants will receive one $5 Amazon gift card when they complete one checklist, and can receive another $5 Amazon gift card when they complete a second checklist. Limit of two gift cards per person while supplies last

All participants will also be entered into a Grand Prize drawing to be held at the end of the summer where they will have a chance to win one of three $50 Barnes & Noble gift cards. Drawing to be held Tuesday August 15, 2023. Winners will be contacted using contact info on entry slips. 

Participating in any of the Teen Summer Reading Program events earns you an extra entry into the Grand Prize drawing!

Who Said That? Weekly Guessing Game

Each week we will give a summary of a young adult book and you guess which famous story it's reimagining or retelling! One guess per person per week. Your answer gets you an extra chance at the Grand Prize! (All answers will be granted entries whether correct or not.)

Join us to create your own album art! We'll provide props, material, and inspiration -- you do the rest! Each participant will have the opportunity to print their album cover and take it home in a CD case.

Welcome to Summer Read-A-Palooza 2023, 'Find Your Voice'!

This is your chance to use your voice while you read, listen, share, and learn, all the while earning entries into a monthly raffle.

How to Participate

From May 30th - August 13th, we invite adults 18 years and older to participate in the 'Find Your Voice' themed Summer Read-A-Palooza!

How to Win 

For each activity or review, you'll receive one entry into a monthly raffle for gift cards to local restaurants. At the end of each month, a winner will be selected. Winners will be notified by email or phone. One monthly prize per person. At the end of August, all participants will be entered into an end of summer drawing with raffle entries that have not yet won. Mark off below what prizes you want your entries to go towards. Prizes must be picked up at the Peninsula Center Library. Check back each month to see who won!

Mini Art Exhibit

Showcase your voice through art by participating in our mini art exhibit. Create a work of art using acrylic paints on a mini art canvas. Your finished mini artwork will be displayed at the Peninsula Center Library from Monday, July 17 through August 16 as part of our mini art exhibit. Registration is required as supplies are limited.  Displaying artwork in the exhibit is optional.

Hidden Pages Bookmaking

Join us for a morning of bookmaking with letterpress and book artist Jennifer Graves. Hidden Pages is a book structure that you can write out loud what matters to you by using your own words or found words. An exciting feature of this structure is that you can create hidden pages that are for your eyes only…unless of course, you chose to share them! No previous bookbinding experience necessary and all materials are provided. Registration is required as seats and supplies are limited.

Griffin Woodard Jazz Quartet

A highly skilled band of young musicians connecting with audiences through individual and collaborative artistic expression, the quartet faithfully integrates each member’s distinctive voice into a radiant, melodic tapestry. Following the performance, a brief masterclass will be given about Black American Music and the quartet's journey through music.

Zumba

Saturday, August 5th, 10:00am - 11:00am

Registration opens July 5th

Miraleste Library Deck

Mix music and dance with Zumba outdoors on the Miraleste Deck! Instructor Charisse Lum will lead participants through a 50 minute Zumba class including cardio and Latin-inspired dance. Participants are encouraged to wear sunscreen, dress comfortably, and bring a hand towel, a bottle of water, a great attitude, and a wonderful smile. Participants should wear comfortable sneakers (not running shoes).
