The Golden Compass is great. After reading it I had to read the rest of the serious. Unfortunately, the the next two books, The Subtle Knife and the Amber Spyglass, are not nearly as good.

This series got some press from the churches for being anti-religious but you won't see any of that in the first book.

Great movie adaptation too. I rarely like the movie after I've read the book but I found the movie to be every bit as good as the book.
