A true classic. Captivating, beautifully translated from original French. Occasional diversions into flowery and fulsome descriptions that do not seem to relate to the story line, which can go on and on. Absorbing characterizations and observations on human behavior. Picturesque language. The author/story teller "talks" to the reader throughout.

Some knowledge of French language is helpful as is a familiarity with departments of France and layout of Paris. Story follows the life of a convict who escapes multiple times, leading a mostly virtuous life and is pursued endlessly by a certain police inspector. So interestingly written that its 1200 pages are not daunting.
