Humphrey Bogart stars in this melodrama-spiced adventure tale about an American flyer in civil war torn 1947 China, hiding from a ruthless warlord (Lee J. Cobb) by assuming the identity of a slain priest in a remote mission settlement. There, he loses his heart to his needy flock of villagers and to the lovely mission nurse (Gene Tierney), a devout Catholic tormented by her taboo attraction to this putative man of the cloth.
