Whenever we come across the word 'Renaissance', in speech or in writing, we instinctively think of Florence. For whatever image each of us, on the basis of his own culture, his own sensibility and his own convictions, is enabled to form out of the group of ideas, works and actions more or less appropriately named 'Renaissance', there can be no doubt that their origin, their principal location and their highest and most coherent expression are to be found in Florence.
