The title and cover art led me to believe this story would be humorous. Although there are amusing scenes, overall the story of Moose Flannagan, his sister Natalie, and the new friends they make when their father becomes a guard on Alcatraz Island in 1935 tugs at the heart. The characters are richly drawn, believable, and the author makes Moose's character flawed and hard-to-forget. Suggested for boys who say they don't like reading.
