25th California Senate District Honors Local Women
California 25th District Senator Roderick D. Wright honored several local women at a celebratory luncheon on Friday, March 5 at the Proud Bird Restaurant for being “Women of Distinction” in the 25th Senate District.
Each woman was recognized individually by Senator Wright and presented with a Senate Resolution. The women have excelled in every field from education and elected office to community activism and philanthropy. “It is women like these who have made tremendous sacrifices and contributions to our communities throughout history. They are proof that one woman can change the lives of many and make an enormous difference in our neighborhoods,” said Senator Wright.

WON’T YOU JOIN THE FRIENDS?
Won’t you join The Peninsula Friends of the Library? We raise money and we raise our voices to ensure a first-class public library for the Peninsula. We are what our name implies: a collection of committed, caring individuals who share a common vision of an excellent, free public library.
ALL THE PIECES ADD UPThe Palos Verdes Library District is a special district with its own governing board of trustees. PVLD libraries at Peninsula Center, Malaga Cove and Miraleste receive about 87% of their revenues from the Peninsula’s property tax levies. Another 8% comes from revenue-generating actativites such as notary and passport services, facility rentals, and interest income with minimal state funding.
The Peninsula Friends of the Library, the official fund-raising organization for PVLD, currently provides 5% of PVLD revenues from support it receives from membership dues, donations, grants, book sales and gift shop proceeds.
Joining the friends helps us to carry out the mission of the Peninsula Friends of the Library. Joining does not mean that you will be volunteering your time as well, although we certainly welcome volunteers.

Malaga Cove’s Tulip Tree Heralds Spring in Palos Verdes
When I came to the Malaga Cove Library in Palos Verdes to volunteer this afternoon, the tulip tree was covered with blooms.
When this happens, I know spring is around the corner–or maybe already here.
Wikipedia says that Liriodendron is a genus of two species of tree in the Magnoliaceae family, known under the common name tulip tree (although it is unrelated to the tulip). Liriodendron tulipifera is native to eastern North America, whileLiriodendron chinense is native to China and Vietnam. Both species are large deciduous trees. Various extinct species have been described from the fossil record.
So, that’s the technicalities of the gorgeous tulip tree, but you’ve got to come and see it for yourself. It’s at the back entrance off Via Pinale and is worth a drive just to see. And look at the rest of this historic library while you are there.
Wrapping Up A Magical Evening With a Slide Show
“What a spectacular evening was had by all of the attendees at the “Magical Evening” February 6 celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Palos Verdes Library District,” reports Board of Trustees member Connie Davenport, who was also the Publicity Chair for the event. Below is a link to a slide show consisting of photos taken by PFL Communications Chair Fran Pullara and some from Volunteer Coordinator, Dori Medina. Can you help to identify anyone? Do you have any photos you took to share?

The after-event press release reported the following:
The event was sold out, and more than 500 people filled the Peninsula Center Library with enthusiasm and good cheer. The rain stopped just in time for the guests to enter on a red carpet.
The Social Hour with cocktails and silent auction was a time for Library Supporters to meet and greet and enjoy the sparkling ambiance. The library area was polished to perfection and was beautifully set off with the black and antique gold color scheme of the event. Masses of black, gold and clear balloons added to the fun of the evening as did the strolling magicians. The sit-down dinner, catered by Restaurant Christine, on the roof of the library (under an amazing tent) continued the evening.
Many of the guests had not been in the library for years or only used limited services. Having the event in the library and then showing a short film developed to introduce the modern Palos Verdes Library District to the community really brought home how much the library enriches life for all ages on the Hill. Library supporters strengthened their commitment and other guests became library supporters. This was one of the huge successes of the evening.
The live auction introduced the District’s new naming rights program and the first room was named—another success of the evening.
The numbers are still being added up, but the event seems to have been a substantial financial success also.
Months of hard work by the 80th Event Committee paid off in a smooth and flowing evening for 500 people. The 80th Event Committee was a team made up of library supporters from the Friend’s Board, Library staff, Board of Library Trustees, the Library Advisory Committees and community members of all age groups. Art students did tablescapes, and teens from Assisteens, TickTockers, Key Club, and Los Hermanos helped the day of the event. Over 85 volunteers in all produced this amazing event.
The dedicated the 80th Anniversary Celebration Committee chairs are: Cc Yu, Chair; Linda Sun, Co-Chair ; Glenous Absmeier, Food Chair; Mary Bavafa, Decorations Chair; Connie Davenport, Publicity Chair; Pat Foltz, RSVP Chair; Jennifer King, Auction Chair; Robert Medawar, Sponsorship Solicitation Chair; Roy Medawar, Video Production Chair; Jim and Lois Moore, Invitation Chairs; Ted Paulson, Site Set-up Chair; Bill Roberts Treasurer; Linda Sun, Programming Chair; Teresa Sun, Ticket Representatives Coordinator; Gail Tierney, Transportation Chair; Fran Wielin, Souvenir Booklet Chair. Staff members on the committee are Kathy Gould, Director; Charles Crouse, Julie Mattix, Merna Marshall, Lasz Latkoczy, David Campbell, and many other staff members supported the event in different capacities.
The Peninsula Friends of the Library and the Palos Verdes Library District extend heartfelt thanks to the generous guests, donors, volunteers, advertisers and sponsors who came together and made this celebration a wonderful success.
Malaga Cove February Book Sale – Yes, Yes, Yes
Did you attend the Peninsula Friends of the Library’s 80th Anniversary gala on February 6? If so, during the live auction you saw this sign projected to our guests. Yes, yes, yes–yes to everything our incredible Peninsula Library District has to offer.
So, this weekend, Friday and Saturday, February 19 and 20, it’s time to say yes to the monthly used book sale at Malaga Cove. The hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, and Malaga Cove Book Sale chairs Gene Roeder and Pat Foltz say that lots of new books have come in, plus thousands of others–and many are on sale from their already low prices.
Do you recognize this chin, or the incredibly beautiful library tie beneath it?
Someone many of you know wore this tie to the February 6 gala. If you shop at Malaga Cove this Friday or Saturday, be sure to give a high five to the hard-working man you think it might belong to.
The Malaga Cove branch of the Peninsula Library District is located at 2400 Via Campesina, Palos Verdes Estates, if you don’t already know. There is a parking lot on Via Pinale for this library or there is lots of street parking. Just park as close as you can so we can load those boxes of books and media you buy.
Or, maybe you want to donate boxes of books or even just a few books.
For further information on the book sale, the famous tie, or donating, call 310-377-9584 x553. See you there!
Love Letter to a Book
A librarian friend e-mailed the following poem which she saw in a library publication. I’d like to give it attribution, but haven’t been able to find it. Enjoy.
You make me leave the house hungry and unshowered, clutching your covers, one foot barely before the other. The little voyage from my house to the office a thousand days long. When the life of your words is too much to bear I halt, breathe, and try to hush the background buzz of people and cars and feet all striding confidently somewhere. I abandon your words to my mind, I let them invade me. I devour them one by one, or in dozens, or in herds and flocks and floods. Suck on them like on roasted ribs, turning them this way and that in my mouth, and when nothing is left, lick my fingers with heavy joy. You make me stop on the street, on the corner, on the stairs – perhaps sit shielded from the wind in some building, on my way to somewhere, now I forget where… You make me almost perish under the wheels of a brand new pick-up truck (No need to yell, Mister, can’t you see I’m in love?). I admonish myself for wanting to flare ahead – wanting to have all of your words all at once; chide myself for losing the most delicious details in my great hunger. I cover the next paragraph, the following page with my palm and laugh at myself for with giddiness of a child knowing she will have her cake, and have it, and have it, and will have her cake and eat it too. I finish you (as if there is such a thing, an end of you) sitting in my office. And then close your covers and smile – all that, all that, before my morning coffee.
Saying Goodbye to a Friend: Georgia Case
- Goodbye
- Auf Wiedersehen
- Arrivederci
- Aloha
- Shalom
- Adios
These are just a few ways we bid farewell to our Peninsula Friends of the Library Campaign Coordinator Georgia Case. Georgia was PFL’s first part-time paid employee and in her 18 plus months with us, she was able to guide us to a whole new level of fund-raising and membership. By the way, if you ever need to find out how to say basic foreign phrases, be sure to check out WikiHow.
Last holiday season, Georgia selected some of her gifts in the PFL Library Shop.
Georgia, it has been such a pleasure for all of us to work with you over the last several months. You put some great programs together and definitely got us started with our fund-raising efforts.
We wish you all the best in your new endeavors and we’re glad that your new position is going to provide the flexibility to be with your family more as well as providing the freedom to travel more often.
In the photo above you see some of the people who came to Georgia’s official going away party at the library on Feb. 9. That’s Georgia (l), Janey Jones, PFL’s President, Fran Wielin, the President of the Board of Trustees, and Dick Lohrer, PFL’s Investment Director.
We hope you will continue to come to our book sales and events. We’ll keep you updated on what we do. Thanks, again.
We Are Still Remembering the Magic
A Magical Evening, the Peninsula Friends of the Library benefit held last Saturday, Feb. 6, is over, but the magical memories still remain for all the volunteers who made the event so successful–and for everyone who attended. Next week we’ll post a wrap-up report so we can all see the fruits of our labor of love. If you double click on these images, you can see them full-size.

Today I added several new photos to A Magical Evening photo set at Flickr. You can see the photos at the bottom of this page on the right. I need captions for many of the photos. Can you help me out? Just e-mail me at redondowriter@verizon.net.
If any of you took digital photos that evening and would like to include them here at our website, e-mail them to the same address above.
Magicians roved among the guests entertaining and surprising them. Can you tell me who the people are with this magician?
As you look back, what was the most magical moment you remember. Just leave a comment and it will publish here.
A Magical Evening Was a Night to Remember
Many thanks to our Director Kathy Gould (l), A Magical Evening co-chairs CC Yu and Linda Sun, and PFL President Janey Jones. If you click on any of the photos, they will enlarge. It took a village to produce this event.
Library Director Kathy Gould reported the basics of the Peninsula Friends of the Library’s remarkably successful “A Magical Evening” benefit at her Directors Blog today. She also posted a gallery of photos there taken by Volunteer Coordinator Dori Medina, so be sure to check there. As the days progress, you will hear more about it at Kathy’s blog as well as this blog hosted by the Friends of the Library.
Guess what Vince Martelli bought his wife Marion for Valentine's Day at A Magical Evening's live auction? These diamond earrings donated by Medawar Jewelers that PVLD's Finance Director Julie Mattix (center) models.
County Supervisor Don Knabe (l), the official event auctioneer, exchanges auction information with PFL's Vice President of Major Gifts Ed Long.
So, hopefully this has whetted your appetite. If all goes well tonight, there should also be a Flickr photo gallery on the right of this page with other event photos.
I’m Fran Pullara, by the way, the Communications Chair for the Friends. I want to thank so many of you for introducing yourself at the event and mentioning you did read the blog and look at the photos.
